It's Transition Time on Kentucky & Barkley Lakes

Written by Doug Wynn - Published on October 14, 2024

Hey Y’all from the Excel Bay 230 Elite.

Transition is the word when it comes to fishing. The migration toward the bays for baitfish and crappie has begun. I was on Barkley twice last week and found the keeper crappie bite almost non-existent while trolling both cranks and jigs.

The yellow bass were active and saved my trip both days. A trip later in the week on Kentucky Lake found pretty much the same. The yellows were very shallow on main lake humps and points. A lot of folks look at yellow bass a a nuisance but they are hard fighters for their size and great on the plate.

Sunday found my group back on Kentucky Lake and the crappie were in a much better mood. It took covering a lot of water and trying different colors. Best depths were 12-18 feet and cover was a plus.

With this cool snap upon us, things will probably change daily until the weather stabilizes. We will see more cool nights and with the water temperature drop, the crappie and all gamefish will feed up for winter. All the crappie we are catching are bloated with shad.

Be careful out there. Welcome to our slice of Heaven.
