Falling Lake Levels Creating Tougher Crappie Bite

Written by Doug Wynn - Published on June 6, 2024

Hello from the Excel 230 Elite.

Falling water should be a good thing after two high water periods but I’m finding tough going this time. The crappie put on quite a show as the lake level got near normal after the first high water event. Not this past time.

I would say the difference has a lot to do with the water temperature now. It is approaching 80 each afternoon. We’ve caught some very nice catfish and several white bass along with a few keeper sauger but the big crappie have alluded my offerings for the most part.

The short crappie have put on a show many days so the future is bright. The crappie we have been catching, plus the white bass, have come on bright colored baits like the Pico INT in DayGlow, D-Wynn, and Shad patterns.

The rain and stormy weather has caused a couple of cancelled trips but I’ve been able to fill a couple days off with new clients from all over. This year I’ve had clients and calls from many new states like Wyoming, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Kansas, and Iowa to name a few.

I built in a few days off so Miss Vicki and I can travel to and fish a lake we’ve always wanted to visit, Dale Hollow. Hopefully I’ll have pictures to share from our trip.

As the lake levels settle back to normal, be aware of those floating gremlins that washed off the banks lately. I’ve seen some serious boat- buster sized logs and parts of docks this past week. Be careful out there!

Enjoy our slice of Heaven.
