Fishing Report Archives

With spring around the corner, I thought I would let everyone know what I’ve been up to since my last report. October closed out the fishing season and fishing was nothing short of spectacular. November found me working at the electrical trade and getting ready for duck season. I did take a short break to deer hunt, but just could not sit still knowing how much work needed to be done before the duck opener.

Duck season proved to be a memorable one for many reasons. I’ve got to see 41 of the 60 sunrises in the blind. I covered four states and put 10,000 miles on the truck in the process. I started my new lab pup Katie, who had zero retrieves to start the season, end with 27 to hand. However, not all were perfect. She has a ways to go, but they have to start somewhere.

I guess I have been spoiled by the way, my trusty sidekick, Lucy, has done it for years. Although I didn’t kill a banded bird this year, I was blessed to get a bucket list pair of black mallards and a pair of ringnecks for the taxidermist! My wife, however, wasn’t that excited to hear about two more pairs of birds to go with the other 12 pairs already on the wall. I have to say I am blessed to have the wife I have.

She plays along really well, and allows me to do what I do. However, the closer it gets to the end of duck season, the more she doesn’t really care for tired duck hunters, and wet dogs. She cares even less for the bank account being at Ground Zero, all in the name of killing ducks, and getting the dogs some work. That being said, she put me back to work at the electrical trade the day after season was over.

She didn’t even give me a chance to wind down and put everything away before her work request which was more like a command! That’s the sign that she has reached her limit and it’s time to get things cleaned up and put away.

These warm days of late have allowed me to get the boat and tackle ready. It is also giving me a chance to edit the numbers from last year to see how the year stacked up. I manage to have 106 days on the water in 2022 with and without clients. With the exception of a few trips, everyone caught lots of fish and went home with plenty of fish to eat! That much time on the water allowed me to keep up with fish movements. As always, I learned some new things, as well as, learned a bunch of new places to fish. As any fisherman will tell you, you can never have enough places to fish! The time spent putting in the work is worth every minute when you see your people smiling, as they catch fish after fish. Staying on the water is the only way I know to do this.

Stable water conditions and good weather last spring help produce a good spawn. This is a positive sign and early bass tournaments have shown good numbers of fish caught as well as good weights. Myself, along with many others would love to see this lake get back to its former glory. Hopefully, we will have stable water conditions again this year to help produce another good spawn.

I have seen some good pictures of crappie being caught this winter on the south end of the lake. I will be targeting these fish first to see if I can catch enough for myself and other folks. I have heard of a good report this spring on crappie, with fish being caught in several different age classes on the north end as well. Let’s hope these crappie are as concentrated and ready to, bite like the crappie on the south end of the lake.

I expect an improved crappie bite this spring but time will tell. If the crappie don’t want to cooperate, I will not hesitate to pull off and chase yellow bass and bluegill. I like action, I would rather have 50 yellows and bluegills as opposed to just a few crappie. Catching fish for the fryer is what I am trying to do. I want people to feel tugs and put fish in a box to take home.

I will begin fishing sometime later this month and will hopefully be on the fish by the start of my guide season on April 1. I have plenty of open days to fill, so give me a call to set up your trip. Anyone who is interested in booking a trip will need a fishing license and whether appropriate clothing. I take care of the bait, tackle, fish, cleaning, and packaging. All you have to do is be ready to fish!

I would like to take the time to thank those who make my guide service go. First of all, the “lucky lady”, a.k.a. the wife. Without her, I am nothing. I am truly blessed to have her. She allows me to live a dream, and keeps me around even during duck season so I know she loves me! Second, I would like to thank Brad Culp of Sportsmans bait tackle and marine repair. Brad and his folks go above and beyond to keep my guide service on the water.

Whether it’s fresh bait, tackle, or motor repairs, he always takes care of me, and gets me back on the water as soon as possible. If you stop in just once, you will see what I mean.
